Jimmy Girvan fatally injuredposted in SRC25 | 09 | 2010

DOUBLE SCOTTISH Rally Champion Jimmy Girvan was today tragically killed during the second stage of the Colin McRae Forest Stages Rally, organised by the Coltness Car Club, in Perthshire.

Inverness driver Jimmy, partnered by his co-driver Mike Ramsay (Findhorn), left the forest track in his Subaru Impreza and collided with trees. No other car or person was involved in the accident and the rally was immediately cancelled.

As is always the case in events run under the auspices of the Hankook Scottish Rally Championship, the emergency procedures were immediately activated. The on-site rescue services team was dispatched to the scene followed by a second rescue service team.

While co-driver Mike was airlifted to Ninewells Hospital in Dundee and treated for his injuries, which were not serious, tragically Jimmy — Scottish champion in 1990 and 2008 — was fatally injured and pronounced dead at the scene.

Jimmy, the extremely popular, well-liked and respected motorsports personality who had a natural ability to make people smile, had enjoyed a successful rallying career over the past 27 years.

"We are deeply saddened and shocked at this tragedy and wish to extend our heartfelt sympathy to Jimmy's wife, family and wide circle of friends," a spokesman for Coltness car Club said. "Jimmy was an ebullient and popular member of this close-knit sport and was regarded as a superb ambassador for motor sport. We'll all miss him terribly."
