Williamson starts third on WEC debutposted in WEC23 | 07 | 2016

HIGHLANDER LEWIS WILLIAMSON qualified third on the LMP2 grid on his debut for Strakka Racing in the World Endurance Championship in Germany. The 26-year-old from Golspie will start tomorrow’s six-hour race at the Nurburgring from the second row of the LMP2 grid, and 12th overall.

The talented young Scot, who already races for Strakka in the Renault Sport Trophy, will share his No. 42 Gibson 015S Nissan with team regulars Nick Leventis and Jonny Kane.

“It’s a terrific way to start my career in sportscars,” Williamson, whose car clocked 1min 49.762secs, just 0.778s off the LMP2 pole time, said. “I’ve been given this terrific opportunity by the team, and it’s one I’m definitely determined to grab with both hands.”

And while WEC regular Ryan Dalziel from Airdrie qualified his Extreme Speed Motorsports Ligier-Nissan seventh in LMP2, Bathgate’s Marino Franchitti starts fifth in GTE Pro, behind the wheel his Ford GT.

At the head of the field, Audi locked-out the LMP1 front row, with Marcus Fassler and Andre Lotterer clocking 1m39.444s, to pip the sister car of team-mates Lucas di Grassi, Loic Duval and Ollie Jarvis.

The Porsche of former F1 racer Mark Webber, partnered by Timo Bernhard and Brendan Hartley, starts third, 0.417s off pole.
