Mitchell bags GT4 pole positionposted in GT15 | 04 | 2017

SCOTS TEENAGER SANDY MITCHELL will start the opening race of the British GT4 Championship at Oulton Park from pole position on Easter Monday after setting a new qualifying lap record.

The 17-year-old from Forfar, who shares his McLaren 570S GT4 with 20-year-old Ciaran Haggerty from Johnstone, lapped the 2.7-mile circuit in 1min 43.103secs.

“This is a terrific way to start the new season,” Mitchell, who became the youngest-ever driver to claim a British GT Championship victory when he won at Snetterton last year, said.

“We know this season’s going to be tough, because the level of competition has risen from 2016, but we’ve proved we have the pace to mix it at the front.

“We’re in the perfect position for the opening race and we’ll be doing everything we can to make sure we start the season with another win.”

While Mitchell ensured the young duo start Monday’s opening one-hour race from pole, Haggerty was edged off the No1 slot in his qualifying session by just 0.072s.

The pre-season championship favourites though do line-up on the front row of the grid for the second 60-minute race.
