Mitchell eyeing Silverstone successposted in OTHER15 | 05 | 2018

FORFAR TEENAGER SANDY MITCHELL returns to action in the Blancpain GT Endurance Series this weekend when he fires up his 190mph Black Bull Whisky-backed Lamborghini Huracan GT3 for the next round at Silverstone.

The 18-year-old Scot will again partner 23-year-old Italian Michele Beretta and 20-year-old Croatian Martin Kodric in their Lamborghini. (Related: Mitchell scuppered by electrical gremlin)

And Mitchell, a member of the prestigious British Racing Drivers’ Club Rising Star scheme, returns to Silverstone, the home of British motorsport, confident of again delivering on-track.

“I’ve raced at Silverstone before, so I know it pretty well,” he explained. “I’ve done well there before when I raced in the British GT Championship, so I’m hopeful we can deliver again this weekend.

“The circuit suits me, and I know it suits the car: we tested there last month, and we were happy with what we achieved. I know the whole team will be fired-up to deliver a strong performance and result this weekend, especially after the disappointment we all felt last time out at Monza.”

Mitchell’s debut at the Italian Grand Prix circuit was frustrating. After being the fastest of the 66-car field on the opening day of testing at the iconic F1 track, his Barwell Motorsport-prepared Lamborghini suffered a rare electrical gremlin early in the three-hour race.

“I was due to take the second stint in the race, but with the early electrical issue I didn’t actually get to race at the amazing Monza circuit,” Mitchell explained. “But that’s motorsport. No one could foresee the electrical glitch which scuppered our chances of a podium finish.

“Even the Lamborghini GT3 engineers had never before seen the problem our car experienced in the wiring loom, which itself was only a quarter of the way through its mileage life span.”

Now though Mitchell, personally backed by Huntly-based Black Bull Scotch Whisky, is fired-up to fight at the front of the field in the the ultra-competitive Blancpain Silver Cup Junior Pro Class.

“We know the car is fast, and the three drivers are capable of delivering podiums and winning races,” he said. “What better place to deliver that than on home soil at Silverstone this weekend.”

In addition to Black Bull Scotch Whisky, Mitchell is grateful to his growing network of loyal sponsors. These include Scots companies Tunnocks, Thorntons, Close Brothers, Stirfresh, InverTay Homes, Provisio Funding and Celurca Investments. In addition, Mitchell is supported by Christie Digital and Stampede Global, two companies which operate on the world stage, and Manchester-based Duerr’s.
