Mitchell up for British GT chargeposted in GT14 | 08 | 2020

SCOTS ENDURANCE RACER Sandy Mitchell heads to Donington Park this weekend determined to strengthen his bid to lift the 2020 British GT Championship. The 20-year-old from Forfar, driving his Black Bull Lamborghini Huracan Evo GT3, is just three points off the championship lead. (Related: Mitchell seals British GT Silver win)

And Mitchell, who will again share his Barwell Motorsport-prepared car with British Touring Car Championship veteran Rob Collard, is looking forward to building on his successful opening weekend at Oulton Park.

“The first weekend proved that we have a fast car, a reliable package, quick driver pairing and an excellent team behind us,” the Scot, part of the Lamborghini Squadra Corse GT3 Junior Program and a member of the British Racing Drivers’ Club’s elite SuperStars programme, said.

“We were second-fastest in qualifying, scored an overall second place, sit third in the championship just three points behind the leaders, and lead the GT3 Silver Cup. So a great start.

“But we head to Donington determined to improve even on what we achieved at Oulton. We know there’s more to come from the car, and this will be only the second British GT round for Rob and I as a pairing. We’re working really well together, and I know we’ll develop more as the season progresses.” (Related: Mitchell returns to British GT with Black Bull)

The format of the Donington weekend consists of one 60-minute race, plus one two-hour race, and Mitchell believes this longer format will aid their efforts to claim the first win of the season.

“Donington’s a fast circuit, and we know it suits the Lamborghini,” Mitchell, personally backed by Huntly-based Black Bull Scotch Whisky, explained. “Racing down through the Craner Curves, one of the most exhilarating sections of track anywhere in Europe, is always a blast.

“We had two one-hour races at Oulton, but the two-hour race at Donington will allow us to really maximise the strengths of the car, the team and our driver pairing.

“Like every race, we know it’s going to be tough. There are a lot of fast cars and drivers in the field. But we showed at the opening weekend how strong our package is, and we’re heading to Donington determined to get our first win of the season.”
