SCOTS ENDURANCE RACER Sandy Mitchell aims to increase his lead in the British GT Championship when he heads to Donington Park this weekend. The 20-year-old from Forfar, driving his Black Bull Lamborghini Huracan Evo GT3, leads the overall championship, and the Silver Cup, both by 16.5 points. (Related: Mitchell storms to British GT win)
And Mitchell, who shares the No78 Lamborghini with Rob Collard, is determined to bag another podium having claimed the duo’s first win of the season last time out at Brands Hatch.
“We want to maintain the momentum we created during the last British GT weekend,” the Scot, part of the Lamborghini Squadra Corse GT3 Junior Program and a member of the British Racing Drivers’ Club’s elite SuperStars programme, said. (Related: Mitchell bags two British GT podiums)
“The guys at Barwell Motorsport, who prepare the Lamborghini, worked tirelessly throughout the weekend to produce a terrific car. Now we all want to replicate that success.”
And for Mitchell and Collard, this weekend’s three-hour race offers the pairing an opportunity to capitalise on their pace at the Derbyshire circuit.
In the two one-hour races at Donington in mid-August, they showed great speed in qualifying in the top three and were able to fight for the overall lead of the race in both wet and dry conditions, which is a positive sign for the weekend ahead.
“This is a circuit I have always gone well on,” Mitchell, personally backed by Huntly-based Black Bull Scotch Whisky, said, “and one I enjoy driving, It’s a very exciting track with a lot of fast corners which makes doing well there especially satisfying. It’s a great place to really push our Black Bull Lamborghini to the limits. (Related: Mitchell seals British GT Silver win)
“Throughout the season we’ve proved both in qualifying and the races that we have a very fast car, a great driver pairing, and a strong team behind us.
“The longer three-hour race this weekend will definitely allow Rob and I to maximise the car on the fast, sweeping track.
“Like all races in the British GT, it’ll be tough. Even tougher this weekend because we also have to serve an extra 20-seconds in the pits as a result of the success penalty we receive after winning at Brands. But we’re confident we can fight back, at least finish on the podium, and hopefully score our second win of the season.”
