Mitchell fifth-fastest in Spa24H qualiposted in GT30 | 07 | 2021

SCOT SANDY MITCHELL was the fifth-fastest driver in his qualifying session for this weekend’s Spa 24-Hours at the iconic Spa-Francorchamps circuit, which hosts the F1 Belgian Grand Prix. The 21-year-old from Forfar outpaced many more experienced PRO drivers in the 58-car field by clocking 2mins 18.612secs, just 0.050s off P4, in his No77 Lamborghini Huracan Evo GT3 prepared by Barwell Motorsport. The Scot — who powered to victory in the Silver Cup class in the 24-hour race in 2019, and last year won the ultra-competitive ProAm class, again with Barwell — is bidding for a hat-trick of wins in the Spa24H.

Mitchell, the current British GT champion and Lamborghini factory driver, will partner Russian ace Leo Machitski, and Portuguese duo Miguel Ramos and Henrique Chaves in the race.

The foursome’s combined efforts in qualifying ensured the #77 car will start P4 in the extremely competitive ProAm class, and 40th overall. (Related: Mitchell wins again at Spa24H)

And Mitchell, personally backed by Huntly-based Black Bull Scotch Whisky, Tunnocks and Thorntons Solicitors was delighted with both his own performance, and that of his team-mates.

“The three guys who all went went out before me in the #77 car did really impressive runs,” Mitchell, a member of the British Racing Drivers’ Club’s elite SuperStars programme, said. “And I’m really please with my performance in qualifying. (Related: Mitchell fastest at Donington British GT)

“To line up fourth in ProAm is  great achievement for us, and the whole Barwell team, and it gives us a solid platform from which to mount another assault on the Spa 24-Hours.

“Having the vast experience of the whole crew at Barwell, which has won multiple races in the Spa24H, behind us means we head into the race knowing we have a strong package.

“But we also all know this is a 24-hour race, and anything can happen. That said, we have the foundation, pace and reliability which will allow us to mix it at the front again.”
