New rail line creates 130 Scots jobs  31 | 08 | 2010

AROUND 130 JOBS are to be created following the completion of the new 15-mile stretch of new rail line laid between Airdie and Bathgate. Due to open in December, the new link between Edinburgh and Glasgow will see 74 of the jobs — including train drivers, station staff and ticket examiners — created in Bathgate. The remaining 56 people will be recruited across the new route.

Funded by the Scottish Government at a cost of more than £300 million, the new route includes three new stations and will travel through Airdrie and Bathgate.

"More and more people are using the train route between Edinburgh and Glasgow and taking thousands of cars journeys off our roads," transport minister Stewart Stevenson said. "If we want that to continue, and if we want to encourage more people to use public transport, then the delivery of projects like Airdrie-Bathgate is crucial."
