Merc C63 AMG heads for Scotland 21 | 03 | 2011

THIS IS MERCEDES' impressive new C63 AMG coupĂ© which the company believes will knock spots off the rivals BMW’s M3 coupĂ© and the Audi RS5. The hardcore AMG C-class produces up to 480bhp from its normally aspirated V8 engine; that puts it well clear of its two German rivals.

In its latest spec, the familiar 6.2-litre, normally aspirated V8 engine produces 451bhp and 443lb/ft, more power and considerably more torque than the BMW (295lb ft) or the Audi (317lb ft). It's capable of catapulting the C-class from 0-62mph in 4.5sec, with a limited top speed of 155mph.

But is that's not quick enough, Mercedes is also offering an AMG Performance Package for the car, which is available with just one transmission — AMG’s seven-speed Speedshift automatic. In addition to swapping the front brakes for composite items and a few additional technical tweaks, power rises to 480bhp (torque stays the same), and cuts 0.1sec from the 0-62mph time.

Due to be available from Scottish Mercedes dealerships from July, the new C63 AMG is instantly identifiable with its AMG front splitter, five-spoke AMG alloys, a rear diffuser, twin chrome exhaust tips, bespoke side sill panels and LED daytime running lights. It's expected to be priced close to BMW's M3 coupe at £57,190.
