PORSCHE HAS UNVEILED its new-generation Macan compact sports SUV. In addition to revisions to the engine and chassis, the latest car also introduces new styling tweak, interior comfort, plus a new infotainment system. The range of standard features has been expanded to include LED main headlights and the new PCM with online navigation and Connect Plus. The new model is available to order now from Scottish dealerships with prices starting at £46,344. (Related: Porsche reveals facelifted Macan)

Porsche has dropped the diesel from the Macan range, meaning there’s  now a three-strong petrol range. The entry-level remains the same four-cylinder 2.0-litre turbo as previously, though it does now get a particulate filter and slightly less power at 245bhp. The range also includes a new 351bhp 3.0-litre V6 in the Macan S, plus a 2.9-litre V6 twin-turbo; this engine is related to that slotted into the Audi RS 4. In the Macan it produces 434bhp. According to the New European Driving Cycle (NEDC), its fuel consumption is 34.9 mpg; equivalent to 185g/km CO2.

New chassis tuning for enhanced handling and ride

In keeping with its positioning as the sports car in the compact SUV segment, the driving dynamics of the Macan remain the primary focus. The revised chassis further optimises the responsiveness and comfort, all aimed at making the Macan even more enjoyable to drive.

As is typical for a sports car, it comes with mixed-size tyres front:rear, enabling the driver to take full advantage of the handling benefits of the intelligent all-wheel drive Porsche Traction Management (PTM) system.

Alloy wheel styles available range from 18in diameter up to 21in as an option.

Streamlined design with full LED lights and new colours

The new, three-part, three-dimensional LED light strip across the rear of the Macan represents a typical element of the Porsche design DNA. The brake lights with their four-point cues are another immediately recognisable embodiment of the brand identity. LED technology is incorporated as standard into the new main headlight design, while the Porsche Dynamic Light System Plus (PDLS Plus) option can be used to control light distribution adaptively.

The front of the new model has been styled to lend the car a wider appearance, while the overall impression intends to build on the sleek lines of the previous model. Buyers also now have more scope to express their personality thanks to the addition of four new exterior colours – Mamba Green Metallic, Dolomite Silver Metallic, Miami Blue and Crayon.

Fully interconnected: Porsche Connect Plus and online navigation as standard

The Macan offers a range of digital possibilities through the use of the new Porsche Communication Management (PCM) system. The full-HD touchscreen is now 10.9 inches wide (previously 7.2 inches). As in the Panamera and Cayenne, the user interface can be adapted to suit personal requirements via pre-defined tiles.

Fully interconnected as standard, the new system features online navigation, mobile phone preparation, two audio interfaces and intelligent voice control. Other features provided on board as standard include Porsche Connect Plus (with LTE phone module and SIM card reader), a WLAN hotspot and an array of Porsche Connect services.

The ability to connect to Here Cloud, which is used for navigational purposes, is essential. The cloud provides the driver with up-to-date online data at all times, thereby allowing the route to be calculated rapidly.

The Porsche Connect app and Porsche Car Connect app enable the driver to communicate with the Macan via their smartphone. And according to Porsche, the Offroad Precision app can be used to make the off-road experience in the Macan even more involving, with the possibility to record adventures as they unfold.

New options: GT sports steering wheel, air ioniser and traffic assistant

The new Macan offers the choice of an expanded range of options with enhanced assist systems to choose from. The optional GT sports steering wheel echoes the style of the Porsche 911. A mode switch integrated into the steering wheel – including sport response button – is part of the optional Sport Chrono Package that can be fitted in the Macan.

The new Traffic Assist system uses adaptive cruise control to allow the vehicle to travel at speeds of up to 37mph. As well as being able to accelerate and brake semi-automatically, the system helps the driver to stay in their lane in traffic jams and poor-flowing traffic.

Porsche has further extended the list of options designed to enhance convenience, which now includes a heated windscreen and an air ioniser which — together with the fine particulate air filter (fitted as standard)— improves the quality of the air inside the vehicle.
