Honda unveils CR-V Hybrid 27 | 09 | 2018

HONDA HAS REVEALED its new CR-V hybrid in full production trim ahead of its public debut at next month’s Paris Motor Show. Buyers will be able to choose between front- and four-wheel drive variants. (Related: Honda confirms new CR-V prices)

Utilising an all-new twin motor Intelligent Multi Mode Drive (i-MMD) hybrid powertrain, the CR-V hybrid mates an electric motor, a 2.0-litre petrol engine and a separate electric motor-generator. The combination delivers a total output of 181bhp and 315Nm of torque. In a bid to reduce mass and size, the system uses a single fixed gear ratio in place of a conventional gearbox.

Depending on driving conditions and how the car is being driven, the system shuffles between its three driving modes; EV Drive, Hybrid Drive and Engine Drive.

While the pure EV and hybrid driving modes are tuned for low speed and urban driving, the range on electric power alone isn’t significant enough to challenge that of the many plug-in systems already on sale.

The petrol engine, meanwhile, will kick in to power the car on motorways. Perhaps more significantly, it’s also used to deliver power to the electric motor and recharge the battery pack.

In terms of economy, the front-wheel drive CR-V hybrid achieves 53.3mpg , with the 4WD achieving 51.4mpg. As for emissions, the CO2 figures are 120g/km and 126g/km respectively.
