New McLaren 600LT Spider 21 | 01 | 2019

McLAREN HAS LIFTED the lid on the new 600LT Spider. The track-focused model — it’s a lighter and more powerful version of the 570S Spider on which it’s based — is available to order now from the only Scottish McLaren dealership. Prices start at £201,500, £16,000 more than the coupe, and first deliveries are scheduled for March. (Related: Roadtest — McLaren 720S)

Designed to sit alongside the 600LT hard-top in a range — which also includes the 570S Spider and Coupe, the 570GT and the 540C — the 600LT Spider is the sixth model in McLaren’s Sports Series. (Related: McLaren plans hybrid future)

Not surprisingly, the 600LT Spider shares all its mechanical running gear with the coupe. That means power comes from the the 3.8-litre twin-turbocharged V8 fitted to the 570S Spider. Power, however, has been increased to 592bhp and 620Nm of torque.

Mated to a seven-speed dual-clutch gearbox, McLaren quotes a 0-62mph time of 2.9secs. Top speed is 201mph with the roof in place, dropping to 196mph with the roof off. The powered roof can operate at speeds of up to 25mph, and thankfully there’s also a separate wind deflector designed to minimise the turbulence in the cabin. Despite being fitted with a carbon-fibre monocoque, as with the 570S Spider, the 600LT Spider tips the scales 50kg heavier than the coupe simply because of the need to fit the strengthening commonly associated with convertibles.

Buyers who opt for the 600LT Spider fitted with the MSO Clubsport Pack will shave 100kg off the weight, compared to the ‘standard’ 570S. The pack adds a host of carbon-fibre interior and exterior parts, plus carbon-fibre race seats and titanium wheel bolts. it will also make your wallet lighter, to the tune of £18,200. Further weight saving can be achieved by deleting the air-conditioning and in-car audio system.

As is the case with the 600LT Coupe, availability of the 600LT Spider will be restricted. Hand-assembled over the course of 12 months at the McLaren Production centre in Woking, Surrey, the 600LT Spider will slip into build slots scheduled around other Sports and Super Series models.
