New Porsche 911 Cabriolet unveiled 09 | 01 | 2019
PORSCHE HAS LIFTED the lid on the convertible variant of the latest 992 generation of the iconic 911 sports car. The soft-top — on-sale now at Scottish Porsche dealers, priced from £102,755 — appears just six weeks after the all-new 911 made its debut at the LA Motor Show. The new Cabrio sticks with the traditional soft-top set-up the convertible has featured since its debut in 1982. This latest version of the fully-automatic roof includes an integrated glass rear window and magnesium bows to prevent the hood from ‘ballooning’ at high speed. The new roof can be opened in as little as 12 seconds, and is operable at speeds of up to 31mph. An electrically extendable wind deflector has also been added to improve passenger comfort during top-down driving.
As you would expect, Porsche has carried over all of the latest tech and visual changes that were first seen on the 992 coupe last year over to the Cabrio. The new soft-top is, however, 45mm wider than the outgoing drop-top. It also rides on 20-inch wheels at the front and wider and larger 21-inch rims at the back for a more aggressive stance. A full-length rear LED light strip and new Matrix LED headlamps at the front are the key design points in identifying the new 992-gen car. Inside, the cabin is dominated by the 10.9-inch colour display on the dash. Behind the steering wheel there’s also an analogue rev counter that is flanked by two smaller digital readouts. The Cabrio will be available as either a rear-wheel-drive Carrera S, or four-wheel-drive Carrera 4S. Both are powered by a new 3.0-litre twin-turbocharged flat-six producing 444bhp and 530Nm of torque. A new eight-speed dual-clutch gearbox is standard.
For the first time, the sport chassis configuration with Porsche Active Suspension Management (PASM) is available for the 911 Cabriolet. The springs are shorter and stiffer, the front and rear anti-roll-bars toughened, and the ride height overall has been lowered by 10 millimetres. These adjustments give the 911 a more neutral feel on the road, with better weight distribution.
Porsche says the Carrera S Cabriolet covers 0-62mph in 3.9secs (3.7s with the optional Sports Chrono Package), and carrie son to a top speed of 190mph. The Carrera 4S shaves a tenth off the 0-62mph, clocking 3.8s; that drops to 3.6s with the optimal Sports Chrono Package. Top speed is slightly reduced to 186mph. Porsche says both cars return 31mpg; but in the real world …. ?
The 911 Carrera S Cabriolet is priced from £102,755, and the 911 Carrera 4S Cabriolet from £108,063.
