Ford GT Heritage Edition 17 | 08 | 2020

FORD HAS LIFTED the wraps from a new special edition of its GT supercar, the GT Heritage Edition. The limited edition — just 50 will be built — has been inspired by its iconic ancestor's first endurance win in the 1966 Daytona 24 Hour Continental race. It’s likely less than 10 will come to the UK next year; prices will start around £400,000. (Related: Ford reveals lightweight GT)

Ford’s win in the 1966 Daytona 24 Hour was captured in the 2019 film Le Mans '66, and began a magical season for the GT40 Mk II, with additional wins at Sebring and Le Mans. The GT Heritage Edition is the first GT to feature a livery famous for a race other than Le Mans.

Externally the GT Heritage Edition gets a white-black-and-red livery — including red accents on the front fascia, roof-leading edge and driver’s side door, and underneath the rear wing — which mimics the look of the 1966 Daytona-winning car. (Related: Limited Ford GT gets iconic Gulf livery)

There’s also an exposed carbonfibre bonnet, which contrasts with a mainly white body. Signature 98 roundel graphics complete the parallels between this car and the GT40 Mk II, which famously sported the number.

Inside, the cabin gains red detailing on the shift paddles and seats. There’s also black suede detailing on the instrument panel, headliner and steering wheel. (Related: Ford GT celebrates '67 Le Mans win)

Sitting on 20in forged aluminium wheels, the GT Heritage Edition is also fitted with red Brembo monoblock brake calipers. For an extra cost, buyers can replace these with 20in, red-detailed carbonfibre wheels and black brake calipers.

There’s no change to the powerplant. Under the bonnet remains the standard GT’s 3.5-litre V6 engine, generating 638bhp. That power is delivered to the rear wheels through a seven-speed automatic gearbox. Performance?  0-62mph in around 3.0sec. The car will carry on to a top speed of 216mph.

“For this Heritage Edition, the Ford Performance team went deeper into the Ford GT’s race history and crafted a limited-edition model that stylistically honors the 55th anniversary of the Daytona 24 Hour endurance race that would eventually lead to our successes at Le Mans,” Mike Severson, Ford GT program manager, said.

Ford has also revealed a new GT-specific graphics package, labelled the Ford GT Studio Collection, which will be rolled out on 40 GTs across the 2021 and 2022 model years. The package allows customers to customise the colour of more areas of the GT, including its functional cooling ducts.
