THE LATEST VOLKSWAGEN Golf is now on-sale in the UK. Prices for the Mk8 start at £23,875. Initially only available as a hatchback, the Golf Estate and performance-focused GTE, GTI, GTD and R variants will arrive in showrooms later this year. (Related: VW reveals all-new Golf MkVIII)
From launch, buyers will be able to choose from four engines; a choice of two petrols and two diesels. The initial £23,875 entry-level ‘Life” model gets a 128bhp turbocharged 1.5-litre four-cylinder petrol engine. Depending on options fitted, it’ll return 49.6-52.3mpg. An extra 600 quid gets you the same engine, but tuned to deliver 148bhp; it’s also marginally less economical at 47.9–51.4mpg. (Related: VW T-Roc Cabrio prices and trims)
VW has ditched the previous 1.6-litre diesel engine. Instead the Mk8 gets two power versions of the VW 2.0TDI, delivering 113bhp or 148bhp. Available only with a six-speed manual as standard, the former delivers 62.8-67.3mpg and is priced from £24,875 in Life spec. The 148bhp, available only in ’Style’ trim and with the seven-speed dual-clutch auto, starts from £29,170. VW claims it’ll return 60.1–62.8mpg.
The new mid-range ‘Life’ trim is predicted to be the most popular trim for the new Golf in the UK. Standard equipment includes 16in ‘Norfolk’ alloys, lane assist, adaptive cruise control, front and rear parking sensors, keyless start, a dynamic road sign display system, electrically heated and adjustable door mirrors, plus automatic LED headlamps. Inside the cabin, Life spec includes a 10in touchscreen infotainment system with sat-nav and voice control, a 10.25in digital instrument binnacle, a 10-colour customisable interior lighting setup, and smartphone charging. In addition, both front seats are adjustable for height and lumbar support.
Next up is the new ’Style’ trim. Priced from £25,470, it adds “Art Velours” seat upholstery, more ambient lighting colours and wood-style trim inserts. Perhaps more significantly, it also gets 17in alloys, and a pair of tweaked LED headlamps.
As you’d expect, there’s a clutch of options available. These include Volkswagen’s £950 Dynamic Chassis Control system (which adds a set of adaptive damper), a head-up display (£625), Matrix LED headlamps (£875), and keyless entry (£400). (Related: VW reveals 341-mile range all-electric ID.3)
