Fiat 500 and Panda get mild hybrids 27 | 01 | 2020

FIAT HAS INTRODUCED mild hybrid versions of its 500 and Panda ranges. The new models — due to arrive in February and March respectively — preview the launch of the all-electric Fiat 500e. (Related: Fiat 500X gets S-Design style boost)

The first electrified models in the Fiat line-up, the mild hybrid 500 and Panda are priced from £12,665 and £13,885 respectively. The duo goes on-sale in February and March. Fiat claims the mild hybrid technology reduces CO2 emissions by up to 30%, meaning 88g/km of CO2 in the 500 Mild Hybrid, and 89g/km of CO2 in the Panda.

Both models are fitted with a new petrol mild hybrid engine that combines the latest 3-cylinder FireFly 1.0-litre engine with a 12-volt Belt-integrated Starter Generator (BSG) electric motor and a lithium battery that delivers 70hp (51kW). (Related: Fiat refreshes its 500X range)

The BSG system, mounted on the engine, recovers energy during braking and deceleration, which is then used to restart the engine in stop/start mode and to assist acceleration. The technology also allows the engine to switch off by shifting the gearbox into neutral at speeds below 18mph.

Both cars use a six-speed manual gearbox, which Fiat says is “aimed at improving fuel economy in out-of-town driving, thanks to new low-friction bearings and gaskets and the use of a specific high-efficiency lubricant”. The new system also involves lowering the entire power unit by 45mm so the car behaves better on the road thanks to the lower centre of gravity.

Both the 600 Mild Hybrid and Panda Mild Hybrid will first be available as ‘Launch Edition’ models, recognised by the ‘Hybrid’ logo on the rear and the exclusive ‘H’ logo, formed by two dew drops, on the centre panel.

In addition, each will feature a new and exclusive ‘Dew Green’ exterior, which Fiat claims suits both cars and “is in harmony with the themes of nature and innovation”.

The Launch Edition seats are the first in the automotive sector to be made of Seaqual Yarn, the weaving of which produces a special material, certified by Seaqual, derived from recycled plastic, 10% of which originates from the sea and 90% from land.

Prices for the Launch Edition start at £16,795 for the 500, and £14,385 for the Panda.
