New Cayman GTS and Boxster GTS 16 | 01 | 2020

PORSCHE HAS LIFTED the wraps from its new 718 GTS 4.0, slotted into both the Boxster and the Cayman; and both, thankfully, see a return to six-cylinder power. On-sale now, prices start at £64,088 for the 718 Cayman GTS 4.0, with the 718 Boxster GTS 4.0 priced from £65,949. (Related: Porsche confirms base 911 prices)

Both are powered by a mildly detuned version of the naturally aspirated 4.0-litre boxer engine fitted to the Cayman GT4. Now, in both the 718 Boxster and Cayman, the engine delivers 395bhp; that’s just 19bhp less than the GT4. It also revs up to a 7800rpm red line.

Both coupe and cabrio get a manual six-speed transmission as standard, and both can enjoy the sounds from the six-cylinder engine via the sports exhaust system. (Related: Porsche reveals Taycan interior)

As for performance? Both cars blitz the 0-62mph sprint in 4.5-seconds, and carry on to a top speed of 182mph. Impressive stuff; even more when you factor in the fact that’s four tenths and 2mph quicker than the outgoing four-cylinder Cayman GTS.

But fuel consumption has also increased, with the new six-cylinder  engine dropping from 28.5mpg to 25.9mpg; CO2 emissions are also up 36g/km, to 246g/km. Hey-ho … both a small price well worth paying for the thrill of enjoying the new ‘six’. (Related: Porsche 718 Cayman GT4 gets flat six)

Externally, the new GTS models differentiate themselves from the rest of the Cayman and Boxster range by dint of black accents for the spoiler lip, air intake and rear diffuser. There’s also a smoked finish for the head and tail lamps.

Both cars sit on 20in alloys encased in 235mm-section tyres at the front and 265mm items at the back. And while ceramic composite discs are available as an option, cross drilled discs gripped by red Porsche calipers are fitted as standard.

Inside the cockpit, dark Alcantara creates a classic sporting, elegant ambience. This tactile material features on the centre panels of the standard Sport Seats Plus, as well as the steering wheel rim, centre console, gear lever and armrests on both doors. In the 718 Cayman GTS 4.0, it also covers the A-pillars and the roof lining.

The optional GTS interior package adds the option of further personalisation, with the contrasting colour choice of either Carmine Red or Crayon. This accentuates the rev counter, seat belts, all decorative seams including the embroidered GTS emblem in the headrests and the Porsche lettering on the floor mats with black borders. The trim elements as well as the centre console trim are made of carbon.

Included in combination with the Porsche Communication Management (PCM) satellite navigation system is the Sport Chrono package, including a Track Precision App. This smartphone app, which originates from motorsport, shows performance-related data on the PCM display while in circuit use and records it for later analysis.
