Porsche 911 Turbo gets 572bhp 22 | 07 | 2020

PORSCHE HAS UNVEILED its new 911 Turbo. Powered by a twin-turbocharged, 3.8-litre flat six engine which delivers 572bhp and 750Nm of torque with an overboost function, the Turbo is available to order now, priced at £134,400 for the coupe. That’s around  £11,300 less than the range-topping Turbo S. The Cabrio Turbo starts at £143,560. (Related: Porsche 911 Targa 4S Heritage Edition)

The new Turbo gets a 40bhp and 40Nm increase over its predecessor. Drive, as previously, is delivered to all you wheels via Porsche’s eight-speed PDK dual clutch auto gearbox.

As for performance? The ‘standard’ Turbo now dips under the three-second mark in the 0-62mph sprint, stopping the stopwatch at 2.8 seconds; that’s two tenths quicker than before. It will carry on to a max of 199mph. Mightily impressive as those figures are, Porsche says the 911 Turbo will still return between 22.6mpg and 23.5mpg on the official WLTP testing cycle. Looks wise, the Turbo is largely similar to the Turbo S, which is no bad thing. There’s a deep bumper at the front with an active front spoiler, plus four tailpipes and a variable wing to the rear. Buyers opting for the Sport pack add a revised design for the full-width tail lights but, more impressively, extra carbon and black exterior trim.

The cabin again mirrors much of the appeal of the Turbo S. The 10.9-inch touchscreen infotainment system, touch sensitive keys and Bose sound system come as standard, meaning the stunning Burmester setup in the Turbo S is an option. That list also includes lane keep assist with road sign recognition, surround view cameras night vision, and adaptive cruise control. (Related: New Porsche 911 Targa gets 444bhp)

The new Turbo is even more planted than its predecessor; the latest model has a wider track, increased by 42mm at the front and 10mm at the back. Porsche says the move helps improve steering precision. Drivers get two suspension setups to choose from: the standard Porsche Active.

The Porsche Suspension Management (PASM) features adaptive dampers that help provide a broader spread between settings; in essence it means it’s more forgiving in its comfiest setting and more focused in its sportiest. (Related: New Cayman GTS and Boxster GTS)

The optional Sports PASM suspension lowers the ride height a further 10mm; another extra, Porsche Dynamic Chassis Control (PDCC), offers active anti-roll stabilisation. Wheels measure 20 inches (front) and 21 inches (rear); and up front house huge 408mm iron discs. Carbon ceramic discs, gripped by 10-piston calipers, are optional.

A sports exhaust system and a Lightweight Design package are additional options. The latter sheds 30 kilos thanks to reduced sound insulation, no rear seats and lighter front seats. (Related: Porsche 718 Cayman GT4 gets flat six)

Available to order immediately from Porsche Centres across the UK, buyers will also be invited to explore the potential of their new car, and further develop their own skills behind the wheel, by participating in a bespoke driving experience around the unique tracks at the Porsche Experience Centre, Silverstone.
