Land Cruiser gains more power 01 | 09 | 2020

TOYOTA HAS GIVEN its Land Cruiser a new turbocharged 2.8-litre four-cylinder diesel engine. The new unit cuts the big SUV’s 0-62mph time by as much as 2.8sec, depending on specification. Toyota claims full consumption has also been ‘slightly improved’, simply by the fact stop-start is now fitted as standard across the range. Order books are open now, with first deliveries due next month. The new powerplant is the same as that recently slotted into the Hilux pickup. In the Land Cruiser, it’s also the same size as the unit it replaces, but power has been raised from 174bhp to 201bhp, and torque from 331lb/ft to 369lb/ft.

Worth highlighting that the new engine is RDE2-compliant, so it qualifies for a lower tax rating than its predecessor, meaning buyers can save £325 in the first year of ownership.

Toyota has also simplified the trim level structure for Land Cruiser buyers. There’s now two equipment grades each for the standard car and the two-seat Commercial variant. (Related: New Toyota Yaris supermini starts at £19,910)

As previously, the passenger car range starts with the Active. Available with a choice of three or five doors and five or seven seats, prices start from £42,345 (an increase of nearly £2000). Standard equipment includes an 8.0in touchscreen, keyless entry, heated wing mirrors, smartphone integration and 17in alloys.

An optional Black Pack can also be specced to the Invincible. This adds black grilles, mirror casings, light surrounds and side mouldings, as well as clear lenses at the rear.

There are also upgrades to the Land Cruiser’s advanced driver assistance functions. Adaptive cruise control function and lane-keeping assistance are now standard, while the pre-collision warning system can now detect pedestrians and cyclists. Toyota has also made tweaks to the SUV’s infotainment system, which now offers a customisable homepage and responds more quickly to inputs.
