Hot VW ID.4 gets GTX badging 16 | 04 | 2021

VOLKSWAGEN HAS CONFIRMED it will badge all its performance-focused electric vehicles GTX. All future ID performance models will be positioned alongside the existing GTI, GTD and GTE model lines. The first performance EV, the ID.4 GTX, will be launched on April 28. (Related: First look at ID.4 design)

The range-topping version of the electric SUV will use a 302bhp all-wheel drive powertrain, and will be the first ID model to go on sale with four-wheel drive. While the system will automatically send power to the front axle, Volkswagen says it will offer a performance AWD ‘Traction’ drive mode.

“The letters GT have long stood for driving pleasure,” Klaus Zellmer, Volkswagen’s marketing boss, said. “Now the X is building the bridge to the mobility of the future. Sustainability and sportiness are not mutually exclusive but complement each other intelligently.”

It’s expected the ID.4 GTX will feature a lower ride height than the regular ID.4, with handling and performance boosted by additional chassis changes. (Related: VW T-Cross Black Edition)

It remains to be seen whether the GTX models will get a new — perhaps, blue-based — variant of the famous tartan trim offered with GTI models. It’s already been expanded into GTD and GTE variants.
