More power for facelifted Porsche Macan 28 | 07 | 2021

SPOT THE DIFFERENCE. Porsche has given its best-selling model, the Macan, another facelift for 2021. There’s more power for the Macan, Macan S and Macan GTS but, given that the SUV’s most recent upgrade was in 2019, not surprisingly the exterior design revisions are subtle. Look closely and you’ll spot a new front bumper with a distinctive body-coloured inlay, while at the rear there’s a more aggressive rear diffuser with a 3D textured surface.

I love the fact the Sport Design door mirrors are now standard on all models — they make such a difference — as are the excellent LED headlights featuring Porsche’s Dynamic Light System. Great for seeing round corners.

Buyers can also now choose from 14 new paint colours, including Gentian Blue Metallic, Papaya Metallic, and Python Green, as found on other Porsche models. There are also seven new wheel designs, and all Macans now get larger wheels as standard. (Related: Porsche Boxster 25 Years)

Inside the cockpit there’s a new centre console that uses haptic touch surfaces in place of buttons; the 10.9-inch touchscreen infotainment system is unchanged.  The driver gets a new GT Sports steering wheel, lifted from the latest 911, and there’s a stubbier gear selector. Noticeably, the analogue clock sat on top of the dash now comes as standard, while the options list includes contrasting stitching in Papaya, Gentian Blue and Crayon. But it’s under the bonnet where the biggest upgrades and improvements have been made. The entry-level Macan now gets 261bhp — an increase of 19bhp — from a newly-developed 2.0-litre turbocharged four-cylinder. It’ll now hit 0-62mph in 6.2secs.

The Macan S squeezes a 2.9-litre twin-turbo V6 under the bonnet delivering an extra 26bhp over the current model. The 375bhp catapult the sporty SUV from standstill to 62mph in 4.6secs. (Related: Hardcore Porsche 911 GT3 gets 503bhp)

But the biggest improvement is saved for the GTS. While it uses the same 2.9-litre twin-turbo V6, power leaps by 59bhp to 434bhp. Performance? 0-62mph in just 4.3s. All models deliver their power via a seven-speed PDK gearbox.

Across the range, the Macan’s already class-leading handling has been further tuned. The adaptive dampers, which are standard on the S and GTS, have been re-tuned for sharper responses. Air suspension — which lowers the ride height by 10mm — is now standard-fit on the GTS. It also benefits from spring rates which are up by 10% at the front and 15% at the rear. The newly-facelifted model is available to order now, with prices starting at £47,780 for the Macan, £53,300 for the Macan S, with the GTS priced from £64,770. First deliveries are expected to start in October 2021.

Such is the significance of the Macan to Porsche that it has sold 600,000 globally since it was launched in 2014. Around round 80% of all Macan buyers are new to the brand.
