VW ID.5 arrives with 323-mile range 03 | 11 | 2021

VOLKSWAGEN’S LATEST MODEL in the all-electric ID range has arrived: the rakish-roofed ID.5, which is closely related to the ID.4 crossover, will be available from UK dealerships in the first quarter of 2022. Prices, which will be confirmed closer to launch, are expected to start from around £47,000. The entry-level ID.5 will be rear driven and be powered by VW’s standard choice of 172bhp and 201bhp motors, each capable of covering 0-62mph in 10.4sec and 8.4sec respectively.

Thanks to the new car’s improved aerodynamics, the 77kWh battery  — which will be standard in the UK — will deliver a maximum range of 323 miles; that’s a slight improvement over the straight-backed ID 4. (Related: Hot VW ID.4 gets GTX badging)

As for charging, like the ID.4 the ID.5 gets a 135kW maximum charging rate, meaning it can be topped up to 80% in less than 30 minutes.

And again like the ID.4, the newcomer will also be available as a performance-focused GTX, which will include an additional motor on the front axle. Output jumps to 295bhp, with the 0-62mph time cut to 6.3secs. And while the increased performance reduces the range, the GTX will still cover 304 miles on a full charge. Inside the cabin of the ID.5 is an updated version of its touchscreen infotainment system. Slightly frustratingly, while it will deliver a faster response time, it does though still include the controversial touch-slider heating controls.

The rest of the cabin is pretty much identical to that of the ID.4, apart from a 12mm reduction in rear head room and a shorter boot.

While Volkswagen expects the GTX to account for 15% of sales, the bulk will be split between the entry-level Pro, predicted to account for 50% of sales, with the more powerful Pro Performance taking the remaining 35%.
