Mazda2 Hybrid on-sale from £20,300 16 | 02 | 2022

MAZDA HAS OPENED the order books for its new Toyota Yaris-based Mazda2 Hybrid supermini. Capable of returning up to 74mpg, prices start at £20,300, with first deliveries scheduled for the beginning of May. (Related: Mazda2 — Azores Epic Drive)

Like the Years, the Mazda2 Hybrid will be available with a choice of three trim levels. Significantly the entry-level Mazda is actually £520 cheaper than the car on which it is based. The new hybrid model will continue to be sold alongside the current Mazda2 pure-combustion model, which is priced from £16,575. (Related: Review — Mazda MX-30 GT Sport Tech)

No surprise that the powertrain is carried over directly from the Yaris Hybrid. A 1.5-litre three-cylinder turbo petrol engine is paired with a single electric motor for a total system output of 114bhp, delivered via a CVT automatic transmission. With a top speed of 109mph, 0-62mph comes round in 9.7secs. (Related: Crossing the world's largest lake in a CX-5)

And it’s frugal. On the WLTP combined cycle, the Mazda2 Hybrid returns 74mpg and emits between 87g/km and 93g/km of CO2. (Related: Updated Mazda CX-5 starts at £27,845)

Again, as is the case with the Toyota, the self-charging Mazda2 Hybrid starts automatically in EV mode and can be driven with the engine off for short distances at low speeds. Regenerative-braking technology is also fitted as standard.

The newcomer is the first full hybrid to be added  to Mazda's line-up. It sits alongside mild-hybrid versions of the 2, 3, CX-30 and CX-5. Eventually it will be joined by the brand's first plug-in hybrids, due in 2023. (Related: Mazda3 named Scottish Car of the Year)

The mid-range Agile, which starts at £21,150, adds a reversing camera, 8.0-inch colour touchscreen and smart keyless entry, in addition to 15in alloys. There’s also the option to add the £980 Comfort Pack which includes gloss black bumper mouldings and a gloss black front grille with lower satin chrome surround. It also sees the addition of LED headlights and front foglights, while inside it adds sports style front seats with black fabric with synthetic leather trim, plus dual-zone climate control.
