Mitchell bags Spa24H Gold pole position 29 | 07 | 2022

    FORMER BRITISH GT CHAMP Sandy Mitchell will start Saturday’s gruelling TotalEnergies 24 Hours of Spa, at the iconic Spa-Francorchamps circuit in Belgium, from pole position in the inaugural Gold Cup.     Mitchell will tackle the 24-hour race in his No77 Lamborghini Huracan Evo GT3, prepared by Barwell Motorsport, and backed by Huntly-based Black Bull Scotch Whisky and Amstutz Produkte. (Related: Mitchell re-writes British GT record books at Spa)

    “It’s a fantastic way to start the weekend by bagging pole position for the inaugural Gold Cup class,” Mitchell, who shares the #77 car with England’s Alex MacDowall and Sam De Haan, plus Oman racer Ahmad Al Harthy, said.

    “All four of us delivered excellent times in qualifying and it sets us up perfectly to be able to battle at the front of the field for the entire 24 hours. (Related: Mitchell storms to Spa24H podium)

    “We could possibly have squeezed into the top 20 Superpole shootout if there hadn’t been so much traffic during Q3,” the Scot, a Lamborghini factory driver and member of the British Racing Drivers’ Club, continued, “but we’ll certainly take pole position in our class.” (Related: Scot Sandy Mitchell wins 2020 British GT Championship)

    In addition to bagging pole position in the Gold Cup, Mitchell and his team-mates will line up 29th overall on the 66-car grid, acknowledged as the biggest GT3 race in the world.
