Wylie gunning for Porsche glory posted in NAT09 | 08 | 2017

SCOT ROSS WYLIE is eagerly counting down the days before he makes the short journey from Thornhill near Dumfries to Knockhill.

The 25-year-old contests the latest rounds of the Porsche Carrera Cup Great Britain this weekend around the 1.3-mile Fife circuit.

The two races, both staged on Sunday, mark a rare opportunity for Wylie to race at Knockhill. The last time he raced there was in 2012, a year in which he contested the Celtic Speed Mini Cooper Cup and won the Knockhill Young Saloon Car Driver of the Year, his first year in car racing after eight years in karting.

Wylie has since won the British GT4 Championship and finished second in the British GT Championship’s Silver Cup. This season he is having his first year in the Porsche Carrera Cup GB as well as selected Britcar Endurance Championship races.

Wylie has achieved five top-10 overall race finishes and five Rookie class podiums – including three class wins – in his SlideSports prepared Porsche and lies ninth in the overall Porsche championship, second in the Rookie division after nine races; a campaign supported by Carronbridge Sawmill (Dumfries) and Fuel Card Services.

“I’m really excited to be racing at Knockhill again and in front of a ‘home’ crowd,” Wylie said. “I’m feeling confident having continued to make improvements on our new car.

“Knockhill is a very technical circuit and is also a very short lap which makes it even more challenging. I actually drove a Porsche for the very first time at Knockhill, coincidentally at the end of 2013 in preparation for their Scholarship.

“My first ever visit to Knockhill was in 2008 having won the British karting championship as a junior and I went there to get first my very first race licence.

“My last race there was five years ago which marked my first season of car racing. I’ll have a lot of family and friends in attendance for what will mark my very first race in Scotland in a rear-wheel-drive car.”
