Tiguan more powerful than Golf GTI 07 | 10 | 2016

VOLKSWAGEN HAS LAUNCHED a new version of its Tiguan compact crossover, which more power than a Golf GTI: the Tiguan 2.0BiTDI also accelerates from 0-62mph in 6.5sec and has a top speed of 142mph

The most powerful version of the firm’s compact SUV so far — available to order now at Scottish VW dealers, with first deliveries expected in November — it’s powered by a 236bhp from a bi-turbodiesel engine.

Coinciding with the launch of the 2.0BiTDI, VW has also unveiled a less powerful 177bhp 2.0TSI Tiguan.

All Tiguan 2.0BiTDI models get a seven-speed DSG dual-clutch gearbox and 4Motion all-wheel drive as standard. According to VW, it’ll return 44.1mpg at the pumps, and emit 167g/km CO2.

The CO2 figure is boosted by the inclusion of a Start/Stop system and battery regeneration. All the engines in the Tiguan range meet the latest EU6 emissions standard.

The bi-turbo 236bhp engine is similar to that offered in the current VW Passat and Passat Alltrack, and boasts a high-performance cylinder head and two-stage turbo charger.

The 2.0BiTDI will only be available in the top two trims of SEL and R-Line. The SEL version costs £36,450 with the R-Line £38,640. Volkswagen expects the R-Line to be the most popular of the two.

The 2.0TSI 177bhp, meanwhile, gets a six-speed manual as standard, with the option of a seven-speed DSG transmission.  It does though also get 4MOTION four-wheel drive as standard; it covers the 0-62mph in 7.7s, carries on to a max of 129mph, returns 38.2mpg and emits 170g/km.

SEL trim comes with VW’s Discover Navigation and 8.0in touchscreen, adaptive cruise control and a 12.3in TFT screen in the main dash display.

The sportier R-Line gets bespoke ‘Race’ cloth seats, featuring ‘San Remo’ microfibre, while the front seats also feature the R-Line logo on the headrest. There’s also Suzuka 20in alloys, an R-Line bodykit with roof spoiler, rear diffuser, larger front air intake, stainless steel pedals and a black rooflining.
