£3k saving on 2017 VW Golf GTE 04 | 04 | 2017

VOLKSWAGEN’S 2017 Golf GTE is now even more attractive, if you’re in the market for a plug-in hybrid. The new model, on-sale now at Scottish dealerships, not only delivers more kit, but it’s £3420 cheaper than it was previously.

Despite being fitted more goodies, including the Active Info Display as standard, after the government’s £2500 plug-in car grant the latest Golf GTE will cost you £28,150. (Related: Roadtest — VW Golf GTE)

Ina addition to the the Active Info Display, the 2017 model also gets an eight-inch touchscreen infotainment system with sat-nav as standard. There’s also Volkswagen’s Car-Net App Connect functionality, plus full LED front and VW Group’s snazzy rear lights with scrolling indicators.

The range has now also been further supplemented with the addition of the GTE Advance, which includes 18in alloys, a Winter Pack including heated seats, tinted rear windows and a front centre armrest.

The Advance also gets VW’s updated Discover Navigation system — with the 9.2-inch Discover Navigation Pro setup with gesture control is an option — prices start at £29,635.

As previously, the Golf GTE is power by a 1.4-litre TSI turbo petrol engine mated to an 8.7kWh lithium-ion battery and electric motor. The batteries can be charged in three and a half hours from a domestic plug, or just over two hours from a wallbox.

VW has also installed Traffic Jam Assist on the revised GTE, allowing semi-autonomous driving at speeds of up to 37mph. The car can travel up to 31 miles on electric power alone, and can hit 81mph in pure EV mode. The same four driving modes are carried over.

E-Mode ensures the Golf uses only battery power, while GTE utilises the battery and petrol engine for optimum performance. Battery Charge uses the engine to charge the batteries, while Hybrid intelligently switches between electric and petrol depending on your driving style.

VW says, in total, the Golf GTE is capable of covering 514 miles on one full charge and tank of fuel. It’ll also sprint from standstill to 62mph in 7.6secs, emits 38g/km of CO2, and has a quoted combined fuel economy of 166mpg. Because of its larger wheels, the Advance has slightly emissions of 40g/km, and manages a combined fuel figure “of only” 157mpg.
