2018 Honda Civic to get new diesel 16 | 08 | 2017

HONDA IS TO ADD a revised version of its existing 1.6-litre i-DTEC engine to its new Civic range. The car will be available from Scottish dealerships from March 2018. (Related: New Honda Jazz gets sporty facelift)

Power for the revised engine remains at 118bhp and 221b/ft. That’s despite the introduction of upgrades including higher-strength pistons and low-friction cylinder bores.

Official figures say the diesel will be capable of returning ‘real world’ 76.3mpg, with CO2 output of 99g/km. It’ll also be capable of 0-62mph in 10.4secs.

As a result of the engineering upgrades, Honda claims the engine will be more refined and quieter than before, pointing to greater rigidity in the engine through the use of more cast ribs on the cylinder block.

In an effort to improve NOx emissions, the new engine has an improved storage converter, which stores the harmful gas until the regeneration cycle is under way. A new soot sensor also improves the longevity of exhaust parts such as the particulate filter.

Later in 2018, Honda will fit the Civic with its nine-speed automatic gearbox, the first time since its introduction to the new CR-V in 2015 that the system has ben installed in a two-wheel drive car.
