New 3D-print accessory range for Mini 27 | 12 | 2017

MINI HAS LAUNCHED a new 3D printing and laser etching service, which is aimed to offer owners a new level of customisation never seen before on a mainstream production car. The service goes live across Scotland in March next year. Significantly, it can also be retro-fitted to older Mini models. (Related: New Mini dealership for Scotland)

The Mini Yours Customised range allows owners to design and replace everything from their car’s dashboard panels to door sills, indicator inlays and even puddle lights. Customers are able to design and order the parts from Mini’s online shop. Each customised panel takes less than five minutes to fit.

Using the latest 3D printing and laser etching technology means the precise recreation of the customer’s designs — using names, logos or patterns, and utilising a range of colours and texture —  are produced in around 12 hours. They are then delivered within the space of just four weeks from ordering.

Mini owners can design their personalised parts on the easy-to-use online configurator which allows customers to change the colour, size and finish of the pieces as they desire. One of the most popular personalised aspects is expected to fall under the ‘names’ category. Mini knows many owners like to christen their car with its own name.

From launch, the parts will be available for the three and five-door hatchback models, as well as the two-door Convertible. The range will extend later to cover the Mini Countryman and Clubman.

Available in Aspen White, Chili Red, Starlight Blue, Moonwalk Grey and Jet Black, the matt-effect components are designed to match the most popular current trim and colour combinations. Additional finishes will join the range later.

All of the customisable pieces have undergone the same rigorous test procedure as any Mini component built into the car on the production line. The all use the same  high-grade metal and plastics to match stringent product quality guidelines. As a result, no piece should break, chip, fracture or fade for the usable life of the car.

Mini has yet to confirm a full price list for the parts, but it’s expected early in the New Year. It’s expected though that the cheapest parts will cost from around £150.
