Audi confirms three new EVs by 2020 02 | 06 | 2017

AUDI HAS STEPPED up its commitment to all-electric cars. In addition to two recently announced new conventional SUVs, the Q4 and Q8 (pictured), Audi has confirmed it will launch three all-new, all-electric e-tron models before 2020. (Related: Audi reveals new Q8 Sport Concept)

The three models will all be launched within the next three years, according to a statement made at the brand's annual general meeting in Neckarsulm, Germany.

The move will trigger Audi’s goal of switching their core models gradually to electric power. By 2025, the company aims to achieve a third of its sales as fully or partially electric cars.

Within the next 12 months, five of Audi’s core models —  likely to be the A1, A6, A7, A8, and Q3 — are also scheduled to be replaced. The first of these, the new A8, is due to be unveiled at the Audi Summit in Barcelona on July 11. Expect both the A7 and A8 to have hybrid variants within their respective ranges.

The three new EVs will be production versions of the E-tron SUV concept, the E-tron Sportback SUV concept and another model. According to Audi, these new models will be battery-electric vehicles, rather than plug-in hybrids.

The move is one of the first results of Audi’s agreement to work with fellow VW Group brand Porsche on vehicle platforms, including those for EVs. Enticingly, that could mean the new models could share their platform with the much-anticipated electric Porsche Mission E.
