VW unveils I.D. Crozz II SUV 12 | 09 | 2017

VOLKSWAGEN HAS UNVEILED a revised version of its all-electric I.D. Crozz SUV. Badged the I.D. Crozz II, the SUV — will launch alongside the I.D. hatchback in 2020 — made its debut at the Frankfurt Motor Show. (Related: New VW T-Roc SUV)

Shown first in Shanghai in April as the I.D. Crozz, the updated version gives clearer indication as to how the production version will look. It also provides more details about the car’s powertrain, including the 4Motion all-wheel drive system and electric propshaft. (Related: VW commits to electric future)

While the standard I.D. will launch as an EV alternative to the Golf, I.D. Crozz II — which measures 4625mm long, 1891mm wide and 1609mm high —  is essentially an electrified evolution of  the Tiguan SUV.

The 101bhp front motor combines with the 201bhp rear motor to deliver a total of 302bhp. VW says the I.D. Crozz II will have a range of 500km (311 miles) and charge to 80% full in 30 minutes. It will have a top speed of 112mph.

Power is sent to all four wheels via the electric 4Motion system. VW claims the new SUV will be “equally impressive in the city as it is on unpaved trails”. It also states the Crozz II’s near-50:50 weight distribution gives it “handling properties on the same level as a Golf GTI”.

The VW show car, which sits on five-spoke 21in alloys, gets a stunning new Hibiscus Red metallic pain job. It also has LED headlights, which VW says are “more representative of those in a production car”. They’ve also been designed to give the I.D. Crozz II a distinctive signature at night.

Rather bizarrely, owners will be able to use voice control to ‘wake up’ the car and open or close the doors. More sensibly, drivers will also be able to voice-activate the I.D. Pilot autonomous driving mode.

It will also be possible to operate the panoramic roof by gesture control, while five Smart Lights will also work in conjunction with the voice control setup. Conventional rear-view mirrors have also been replaced with cameras, relaying the information onto an internal screen.

Inside the cabin, there’s a huge open-space area — which VW describes as ‘lounge-like’ and featuring four individual seats — created as a result of the 83kWh lithium-ion battery pack being integrated into the car’s floor.

Not surprisingly, the dashboard — dominated by a hovering 10.2-inch central screen — is fully digital, while the retractable multi-function steering wheel has been fully prepared for autonomous driving. The majority of controls can be operated by voice and gestures.

"As early as 2020 we aim to sell 100,000 all-electric Volkswagens per year,” Herbert Diess, VW brand chairman, said. “But this is just the beginning. By 2025, annual sales could increase ten-fold to one million vehicles.”

Diess said the new electric car line-up will be offered alongside traditional combustion engine and hybrid powered Volkswagen models.
