Audi launches Q8 flagship coupe-SUV  05 | 06 | 2018

AUDI HAS OFFICIALLY launched its new luxury coupe-SUV, the Q8. On-sale from Scottish dealerships in July, prices for the sister vehicle of the Q7 are expected to start around £65,000. (Related: Roadtest — Audi RS4 Avant)

Measuring 4986mm long, 1995mm wide and 1705 mm high, the Q8 is actually about 66mm shorter than the Q7, but most of that is accounted for in shorter overhangs, as it shares the sister car’s wheelbase. The Q8 also boasts a more aggressive and sporty stance, aided by its lower roofline and being 27mm wider than the Q7. (Related: Audi confirms three new EVs by 2020)

The front of the newcomer is dominated by a single frame grille inspired by the original Audi quattro, while the rear of the car gets a similar lighting signature to that of the latest A8 limousine.

From launch, buyers will have only one engine choice; the 282bhp 3.0-litre V6 diesel badged Q8 50TDI will cover -62mph in 6.3 seconds and continue to a top speed of 144mph. A 335bhp V6 petrol 55TFSI will follow in 2019, with a V6 45TDI with 228bhp joining the line-up later next year. The later is likely to reduce the entry price of the Q8 range below the £60k barrier.

48V mild-hybrid technology — allowing extended stop-start and a coasting function when the throttle pedal is lifted between 34mph and 100mph — features on all engines in the new Q8. Audi’s iconic quattro four-wheel drive as also standard across the range. And while the 55TFSI gets a seven-speed dual-clutch box, the 50TDI gets an eight-speed Tiptronic ‘box. And while only two specs will be available in the UK at launch — entry-level S line and flagship Vorsprung — HD Matrix LED headlights, 21in alloys, leather and Alcantara sports seats, and the latest Audi infotainment system, are standard. The higher-specced Vorsprung adds four-zone climate control, a Bang & Olufsen stereo, a Titanium styling pack, heated rear seats and 22in alloys. Adaptive air Sport suspension will also be standard on all UK cars.

The Q8 will also be offered with Audi Drive Select, with up to seven modes. These alter not only the suspension, but also the steering and engine response. All-wheel steering, as fitted to Audi’s A8, will also be available on the Q8 to help with high-speed changes of direction and manoeuvrability around town.

Inside the Q8, the cabin draws heavily on the design and layout of the latest A8. All the car’s principle systems are controlled through a pair of central screens. The top 10.1-inch display handles infotainment and navigation, with the lower 8.6-inch panel operating the heating and ventilation. It also allows text input for destinations or phone contacts. Also available will be Audi’s excellent Virtual Cockpit digital instrument panel, along with a head-up display.

Available as a four or five-seater, boot capacity is 605 litres with the rear seats in place. The rear row can slide fore and aft to prioritise cabin space or the luggage area. Fold the rear seats flat and stowage increases dramatically to 1755 litres. A powered tailgate is standard.
