Di Resta fastest Merc in DTM testposted in DTM31 | 03 | 2014

BATHGATE'S PAUL DI RESTA was the fastest of the Mercedes drivers on the first official day of testing ahead of the German Touring Car (DTM) Championship.

But the 27-year-old former DTM champ acknowledged his team still has some work to do ahead of the season-opener at Hockenheim on May 4.

"This is a brand new car for Mercedes this season, so we're all learning what makes it go faster," Di Resta, who posted a fastest time of 1min 40.383secs at the Hungaroring, just outside Budapest, explained today.

"We had a programme which we worked meticulously through today, so everybody in the team is happy with where we are.

"Unfortunately though, the day was cut short by two hours to allow the track operators to make some running repairs after problems developed with the surface.

"Importantly though, we have another three full days here, which means we'll be busy trying to optimise the new package as much as we can."

Audis locked-out the top four positions on the timesheets, with Spain's Miguel Molina fastest, clocking 1:37.792.

The next four slots were filled by BMWs, with former F1 racer Di Resta ninth-fastest, 0.051s ahead of Mercedes team-mate Gary Paffett.
