Leaf picks up World Car of the Year 21 | 04 | 2011

NISSAN'S LEAF electric vehicle has been named World Car of the Year. The award, announced at the New York Motor Show, saw the Nissan beat off competition from runners-up, the Audi A8 and BMW 5-series.

The Leaf, which rather controversially is also the current European Car of the Year, was praised by the 66 jurors as “feeling like a normal car, only quieter”.

One award the Leaf — which is handled solely in Scotland by Nissan dealer Alex F Noble in Edinburgh — didn't pick up was the World Green Car of the Year award which went to the Chevrolet Volt which beat the BMW 320d EfficientDynamics into second place.

The World Car Design of the Year Award went to the Aston Martin Rapide, while the Ferrari 458 Italia triumphed over the Mercedes SLS AMG and Porsche 911 Turbo to win the World Performance Car of the Year.
