Audi Q6 set to challenge BMW X6 29 | 03 | 2011

AUDI IS planning to go head-to-head with BMW's X6 by developing a new performance-orientated crossover set to be badged the Q6. It's understood the new model — a five-seat crossover — will use the same four-wheel drive underpinnings as the second-generation Volkswagen Touareg and Porsche Cayenne. Both these models use a short wheelbase (2895mm) version of the Volkswagen Group’s 'Colorado' platform; in long-wheelbase (3000mm) form it's the platform beneath the Audi Q7.

Although Audi has still to confirm the existence of the Q6, Audi boss Rupert Stadler, admitted: “We can imagine a model between the Q5 and the Q7... a coupĂ©-like, four-wheel driven model.”

When it does go into production, the Q6 — which is already being demanded by Audi dealerships in the US and China — will boast a number of powerplants, including a range of V6 and V8 petrol and diesel engines. In addition, expect to see a V6 petrol engine-electric motor hybrid drive option similar to that found in the VW Touareg and Porsche Cayenne hybrids.

And in complete contrast to the hybrid models, talks are also ongoing which would see the introduction of a range-topping Q6 RS. This would be powered by the new turbocharged 4.0-litre V8 engine, the engine which is expected to make its debut in the new-generation RS6 at the Frankfurt motor show in September.
