Hyundai Veloster Turbo confirmed 05 | 03 | 2012

HYUNDAI HAS CONFIRMED it will launch a turbo version of its Veloster: the car is aimed at catering for customers looking for more power from the sports coupe.

The Veloster Turbo is the first Hyundai to feature the company’s 1,6-litre GDI engine with a high-compression, twin-scroll turbocharger.

In European specification, this new T-GDI unit generates 184bhp and 270Nm of torque. In non-turbocharged form, the Veloster offers 138bhp and 167Nm. Turbo-charging the engine has resulted in the 0-62mph time being cut from 9.7secs to 8.4 on the Turbo model.

"UK drivers tend to prefer more torque from a lower engine speed," Tony Whitehorn, president and CEO of Hyundai Motor UK, said, “so our European engineers have specified a set-up that still provides a substantial increase in power while also delivering the desired low-end torque.

“The resulting package is very competitive against the performance of competitors such as VW Scirocco and Vauxhall Astra.”

Extra features on the Turbo include unique front and rear bumpers and foglights, new rear spoiler and grille, new 18in alloy wheels with chrome inserts, projection headlights with unique LED headlight accents, and unique LED tail-lights.

Hyundai will confirm the pricing of the Velostar Turbo closer to its launch.
