Toyota Hilux gains hardcore AT35 05 | 02 | 2021
TOYOTA HAS PRODUCED a new hardcore version of its iconic Hilux. Partnering with revered off-road engineering firm Arctic Trucks, the new Hilux AT35 is a heavily upgraded version of the latest pick-up truck. (Related: Scot Rory Butcher to lead Toyota BTCC assault)
First-up, you need a new Hilux in range-topping Invincible spec. Then, because it’s a manufacturer-approved conversion, the AT35 kit can be ordered direct from Toyota. Prices start from £18,780 (plus VAT); and that. of course, is on top of the £33,783 (plus VAT) purchase price of the Hilux Invincible X Double Cab 2.8 with six-speed auto. Externally the AT35 gains new flared wheel arches, extended side steps, plus bespoke badging and a certificate of authenticity. The options list include an underbody 'armour' package, front light bar and an on-board tyre inflation/deflation device. (Related: New entry-level Toyota GR Supra 2.0)
All-in-all, the AT35 is a pretty imposing piece of kit, being 90mm wider, 90mm taller and 115kg heavier than the standard Hilux. It also benefits from a 43kg increase in payload (1053kg).
What you get with the new pack are modifications to the chassis, suspension and styling of the Hilux, all aimed at delivering "even greater off-road capabilities". (Related: Toyota Yaris Hybrid — Review)
The principal chassis revision is a suspension lift. Combined with the larger 35in BFGoodrich All-Terrain tyres, the result is an additional 65mm of ground clearance. Approach and departure angles are also improved by 9-deg and 3-deg respectively.
Out goes the Hilux’s standard suspension, to be replaced by the latest version of Arctic Trucks' Bilstein performance system. This brings bespoke springs and dampers at the front, an adjustable anti-roll bar and extended shackles at the rear. (Related: Lexus LC 500 Carbiolet — Review)
Toyota says the AT35 offers "superior mobility from the wider front and rear tracks, wider tyres and a larger, 'lighter' footprint for more secure driving over soft and delicate terrain". Worth highlighting that the larger tyres also reduce harshness when driving at speed over rough terrain.
Power for the AT35 comes from the same 201bhp, 2.8-litre turbocharged diesel unit found in the standard Hilux Invincible X. That power is sent to all four wheels via a six-speed automatic gearbox. Toyota hasn’t released the effects the modifications have on performance, but it’s to be expected there will be slight speed and efficiency penalties.
Thats said, AT35's front and rear differentials have been re-geared to optimise acceleration. (Related: New Toyota Yaris supermini starts at £19,910)
And because conversion features are carried out by Arctic Trucks technicians to original manufacturer standards, Toyota’s five-year/100,000-mile new vehicle warranty is maintained. The model is fully type-approved and retains commercial vehicle status, with no compromise in payload or towing capacity.
