Mercedes unveils S65 Cabriolet 15 | 12 | 2015

MERCEDES-BENZ AMG has lifted the wraps from its new twin-turbocharged 6.0-litre V12 S65 Cabriolet which will be officially unveiled at next month's Detroit Motor Show. The car will go on-sale in Scotland in April, with prices expected around £200,000 (see more photographs of the new S65 Cabrio).

Delivering 621bhp through the four-seater's rear wheels, the S65 — like its coupe sibling — uses a seven-speed automatic gearbox with three differing drive modes – Controlled Efficient, Sport and Manual. The cabrio is shod with 20in wheels as standard, fitted with 285/35 tyres.

Weighing 175kg more than the coupe, simply by dint of he added bracing incorporated within its platform, Mercedes states the cabrio hits 62mph from standstill in 4.1sec, the same time as its 2035kgfixed roof S65 Coupe sibling.

Top speed for the cabrio is electronically restricted to 155mph, but an optional Driver’s Package — which includes uprated tyres — raises the max it to 186mph.

For the frugally-minded, the S65 Cabrio returns — at least officially —  23.5mpg (more likely, high to mid-teens in real-world driving), and emits 272g/km CO2.

Eagle-eyed amongst you will have noticed the liberal use of chrome within the air ducts incorporated in the front bumper, unique wheel design, V12 bi-turbo badges along the flanks as well as a high gloss black diffuser, quad-trapezoidal shaped tailpipes and S63 identification at the rear, all of which distinguish the S65 Cabrio from other S-Class cabrio models.

The multi-layer fabric roof — which can be opened and closed on the move at speeds of up to 31mph, all within 17 seconds — is available in black, dark blue, beige and dark red.

Mercedes-Benz’s Aircap wind protection deflector is standard inside the cabrio's luxurious cabin, as is Airscarf heating element in the backrests of the front seats and heated armrests among a raft of upmarket features.
