Powered by its 6.5-litre V12, the 2017 model now hits 62mph from standstill in 2.9sec and carries on to a top speed of 217mph. Lamborghini engineers have adjusted the naturally aspirated engine’s variable valve timing and intake system to enhance its performance.

That power is delivered to all four wheels via Lamborghini’s Independent Shifting Rod seven-speed gearbox, and the 2017 also benefits from new exhaust that’s 20% lighter than previously.

And though the car weighs the same as the outgoing model,  1575kg, its power-to-weight ratio has been improved to 463bhp/ton, an increase of 25bhp.

The performance of the Aventador S has been further boosted by a new, more aggressive front bumper which helps produce 130% more downforce on its nose. Meanwhile, the rear wing can be moved into three positions, increasing downforce by up to 50%; it also reduces drag by 400% in its optimum setting.

Built around the same carbonfibre monocoque as before, the 2017 model incorporates new four-wheel steering, the first time a series production Lamborghini has used such a system.

As you would expect, the system improves agility and high-speed stability, while also improving low speed manoeuvrability. Lamborghini has also retuned the car’s all-wheel drive system to enable up to 90% of the engine’s torque to be send rearwards.

Inside the cabin, there’s a new TFT touchscreen with Apple Carplay included as standard. Software also allows the driver to individually tweak the car’s drivetrain and suspension settings by selecting from four driving modes, Strada (Street), Sport and Corsa (race), plus a new Ego setting.
